I'm Gabriel, and also go by 8Bit online. While I have other interests, a life-long special interest and frequent hyperfixation of mine is Pokemon. I'll probably have a page here for a shrine. I live in the UK and currently work part-time, but trying to find full-time work in a relevant career.
Gabriel is also the name of the Mightyena Gijinka you might see around here. He's a mix between an online persona and an OC, as he's also a shiny hunter.
Why this site?
Beyond the previously mentioned love for coding (Keeps my hands and mind busy and is a ton of fun when I can figure out the solution to a bug or glitch. Very frustrating is I can't), I love the culture and aesthetics of wold web and web 2.0 things.
I love the customisation. I love the expression of self without being restrained to what Twitter or Reddit wants. There is absolutely no expectation of 'going viral' or following trends (although you can follow trends here, but those trends are for fun). You put out exactly what you want to put out, not what you thinks others want to see. Also, you find what you want to find. You can broswe thorugh man-made webrings and tags to find similar content, not what AI thinks (verly poorly) you should see. If I stumble onto an alt-right website, I took a wrong turn. If I stumble onto an alt-right tweet, that's the algorithm spitting on me. Makes sense?
Above all, everything here was made by someone. The code and css was written by a human, the customisation was altered by me. The stamps and buttons were made with intetion by another person. No bot was used to create anything (beyond like, the machine used to make blinkies. You get it). Unlike othersites with a wild repost + bot problem
Every neocity site created. Every shrine bursting with personality. Every webpage sending you back to the 90s and early 2000s. Every pop-coloured stamp and blinkie. EVERYTHING kicks the 'dead internet' theory back into the ground. And it is designed to stay put, in it's little corner, for others to come and go as they please. Maybe nobody will view this site today, but someone will months or years from now on. I hope they click around, get a slightly better understanding of me, and go "heh nice.". If I'm really lucky, they'll be inspired to create something.
